WCCA was established in 1948 with six local contractors: Tom McCall, Art Phipps, Art Gilbert, Maurice Gardner, Carl Polland and one other. The association was the result of these contractors getting together to discuss their common issues on the Western Slope of Colorado, and continues to be a local contractor organization today. The contractors would sometimes meet on Friday afternoon to discuss issues for the common good in the building industry, and would occasionally invite speakers such as the building inspector or planning department members to discuss issues and needs. The group was made up from the majority of the local general contractors in the Grand Junction area at the time. After meeting for a while, they decided they needed a common voice and formed the association.

1948

Western Colorado Contractors Association is established by six area contractors to have a voice in Western Colorado.

1960

The WCCA Plan Room and its adjoining office open in the Intermountain Glass & Metal Company.

1966

The WCCA Plan Room moves to the basement of the Independent Lumber Company near 1st Street and Grand Avenue.

1971

WCCA participates in the Construction Industry Management Council to give the association a voice in the statewide group.

1972

The WCCA Plan Room gets a phone!

1976

WCCA opens its Plan Room at 1000 N. 9th Street, Suite 14. The association leases a copier and buys office furniture.

1977

Women are allowed to attend general WCCA meetings.

1980

WCCA merges with Associated General Contractors of Colorado (AGC/C) and becomes a branch chapter of AGC/C.

1985

WCCA’s Plan Room moves to 1250 N. 25th Street.

1988

WCCA’s Plan Room moves to 145 Grand Avenue.

1989

WCCA discontinues affiliation with AGC/C.

1992

WCCA moves its Plan Room to 1227 N. 23rd Street., Suite 101, and purchases a computer.

1996

WCCA hosts its first Grand Junction Golf Tournament at Adobe Creek with nine participating teams.

1997

WCCA reaches 97 members.

1998

WCCA logs onto the internet.

2000

WCCA members extensively remodel office space at 1227 N. 23rd Street, Suite 107 for WCCA’s expanded Plan Room and offices,

2000

WCCA opens its Glenwood Springs Plan Room; WCCA reaches 200 members.

2002

WCCA unveils its Online Plan Room.

2004

WCCA hosts its first Golf Tournament at LaKota Canyon in New Castle.

2007

WCCA starts a scholarship program for construction trades through Western Colorado Community College.

2007

WCCA pays off its mortgage for the building at 2470 Patterson Road, Suite 14.

2012

WCCA organizes a mud run to benefit Western Slope Special Olympics. Over $34k was raised in 3 years for the program.

2013

Colorado Mesa University adds its construction management program.

2014

WCCA elects its first female president, Katy Schreiner.

2017

WCCA begins the Heavy Equipment Operators Apprenticeship through the Colorado Department of Labor.

2019

Western Colorado Construction Career Day is created through a collaboration of area partners to provide 11th grade students hands-on exposure to careers in construction.

2020

WCCA works with the State of Colorado to develop contractors guidelines during the COVID 19 pandemic..

2021

WCCA starts Traffic Safety Certifications classes to help encourage careers in traffic safety, and works with CDOT to develop a standard program across the state.
